CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB):

Summer Training / Project Work (PW) /Dissertation Work (DW) Programs are offered by IICB, Kolkata campus for postgraduate students. The aim is to let young minds feel the thrill and excitement of science by working on a project requiring application and critical appreciation of scientific principles.  Selected students to pay the admissible charges as per CSIR-IICB guidelines. The students have to make their own arrangements for accommodation.

Fee structure:  Rs. 5,000/- (Rupees Five thousand) per month consolidated for a period of 6 months, Rs. 40,000/- (Rupees forty thousand consolidated) for more than 6 months but less than 9 months, Rs. 50,000/- (Rupees fifty thousand) consolidated for a period of 9 months to one year. Students looking to enrol for Summer training programme must apply through government supported projects, for example, KVPY, INSPIRE, INSA/IAS which provides fellowships.

Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Center For Biomedical Research

ACBR offers three different types of training programs.

  1. Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP):14 weeks from May to August every year to impart practical training in various newly emerging research techniques in the multi-disciplinary areas of biotechnology. The outstanding Students will be offered a Scholarship/Fellowship of Rs 2,500/- on completion of SURP. Applications for preparing under SURP must be sent to the Director of ACBR at the latest May every year.
  2. Science Academy Summer Research Fellowship Programme for Students and Teachers: The three national Science Academies viz. the Indian National Science Academy New Delhi, Indian National Academy of Science, Allahabad and, The Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, together offer two-month Summer Fellowships to enable students/teachers to work with Academy Fellows and reputed scientists every year. Applications are invited by the academies from interested students and teachers from all Universities and Colleges affiliated to UGC/AICTE/MCI/Accredited Institutions of State Universities for these Fellowships. Every year 5-6 selected candidates carry out their two months’ summer research project awarded by the academies at ACBR.
  3. Training Program: Training Programme for college teachers under the CPDHE, self-initiated programmes for students and school teachers in modern areas of biology and chemistry are conducted periodically by the faculty of the Center with the support from different organisations.

Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc)

Graduates inspired by seeking after summer entry level positions at the IISc can email Scientists whose exploration interests lines up with theirs and enquire about open positions in their lab. Numerous understudies have likewise been set at the IISc for summer training and temporary positions programs through the two-month summer aid offered by the three national science foundations. Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB)

IGIB provides free as well as paid training to students with good academic record as well as interest and aptitude. The duration of the training can vary from 2 months up to one year. Period of training; Two months / Six months etc (The two months’ programme is for the summer months of May/June /July). Preferred Date of start of training; (May-June for 2 months and January/July for 6 months).

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR)

JNCASR conducts four different training programs such as Summer Research Fellowship Programme (SRFP), Visiting Fellowships, Project Oriented Chemistry Education (POCE) and Project Oriented Biology Education (POBE). SRFP and POBE are most suited for Biotech students.

SRFP requires minimum qualification includes from BSc. B.Tech and above. The students selected under this programme are placed with scientists at the Centre or elsewhere in India, for 2 continuous months with a stipend of Rs. 6000/- p.m and travel support as per Centres norms. The programme will be conducted during the summer vacation for a period of 6 to 8 weeks.

POBE scheme undergraduate students selected are expected to work at the Centre for three consecutive summers and successful candidates will receive Diploma in Biology from the Centre. Those who complete the POBE programme with outstanding performance will be eligible for admission to the MS-PhD programme of the Centre subject to a satisfactory performance in the interview. Students presently studying in 1st year of three year B.Sc programme only (in any science stream) are eligible to apply. A scholarship of Rs. 6000/- per month will be provided.

National Brain Research Centre (NBRC)

Students for summer training at NBRC are selected through the summer fellowship programme of the three National Science Academies (Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and National Academy of Science, Allahabad).

Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL)

A scheme of practical industrial training for M.Sc./M.Tech./B.E./B.Tech/MBA. Biotechnology students. The training period is for six months during which a trainee is paid stipend of Rs.10,000/- per month and trainer company is paid a bench fee to cover the expenses for providing training. The advertisement for the programme is published in national newspapers once in a year in the month of April-May and online application forms for students and requisition forms for companies are available on website for submission.

Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB)

CCMB offers summer training (2 months) as well as dissertation programs (6 months) for students whose curriculum demands with project work in their final year of study. Summer training notifications are mostly open every year between Jan-Feb.

ICAR – National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology (NRCPB)

The project work-training of five to six months will be offered to students doing M.Sc/ M.Tech in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics or Life Science disciplines, and B.Tech (Biotech/Bioinformatics) degree programmes. A course fee of Rs. 5000/- per month plus service tax (15%effect from 01 June 2016) will be charged. The selected candidate will have to work in one of the on-going projects of the centre under the supervision of a scientist of NRCPB. On completion of project work the candidate will be allowed to submit a thesis/report/dissertation to his/her institution with signature of the scientist of NRCPB as co-supervisor. A copy of the thesis must be submitted to the Director, NRCPB and any publication or IPR resulting from the project work will be in the name of NRCPB.

IITs & NITs

Some of the IITs provide both summer training as well as project oriented programs to graduates.

IIT Bhubaneswar  gives short-term training with no fellowships. Students must bear the expenses arising from Internship.

IIT Bombay offers projects as well as summer training for students. Summer training (8 weeks- Rs. 6,000/), Degree project work for B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./MCA (6 months- Rs.15,000/), Masters’ project work at M.Tech. level (6 months- Rs.20,000) and Masters’ project work M.Tech. level (6 months – 1 year at Rs.25,000/). IITB Research Internship Award is designed to be an educational and professional research experience. The selected interns are required to work full time for four to six months on the project and will be given a fixed stipend of Rs. 10,000/- per month. Read more HERE.

IIT Gandhinagar offers Summer internship research program (SRIP) to students in first, second and third year of UG studies are encouraged to apply. Students in their first year of PG studies can also apply. Typically for 8-12 weeks. Read more HERE.

IIT Guwahati Dept. of Biotechnology offers Summer Training in multidisciplinary areas of biotechnology to both undergraduate & graduate students of science & engineering disciplines for period of 10 weeks. A non-refundable Rs. 5000/- is to be paid by the selected candidate to get admission in the training programme.

IIT Madras Summer Fellowship Programme of two months with stipend of Rs.6000/- per month will be given. Read more HERE.

IIT Mandi The period of internship will be about 8 weeks; selected candidates will be provided free hostel accommodation and a stipend of Rs. 8000/- for the entire 8 weeks’ period. Travel and living expenses should be borne by the intern. Read more HERE.

IIT Roorkee  asks for a bench fee of Rs. 5000/- P.M. per student be charged by the Institute from the students/ sponsoring Institute(s) for 8-week summer Internship Programme. Read more HERE.

IIT Ropar 5-8 weeks Summer Internship Programme is offered with a fellowship of amount Rs.5000/- p.m and Rs. 10,000/-for the 2 months. The students selected for internship may be provided hostel accommodation. Read more HERE.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER)

IISER institutes offers summer student programme aimed for 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of BSc/BTech/B.E and 1st year of MSc or MTech. Summer students will be paid a stipend of Rs 5000/- per month and it lasts 4 – 8 weeks.  Branches to watch out for notifications IISER Bhopal, IISER Mohali,  IISER Thiruvananthapuram (Summer Visiting Programme and Prathiba Scholar Visiting Programme ), IISER Pune and IISER Kolkata.

Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine(Instem)

The training program at inStem is open to interested and motivated pre-doctoral candidates and usually comprises M.Sc. students between their first and second years. Many students also do their Masters projects here. Engineering and medical students are also encouraged to apply.

Applications are accepted all through the year. Individual faculty members choose the students they will accommodate in their laboratories. Many of the Centre’s trainees find their research experience invaluable. Perhaps the most tangible benefits of this program are manifest in the number of such trainees who are enrolled for a degree in the best research laboratories within the country and outside.

UGC Resource Network Program with JNU

NII offers 6 months training program and enrols students twice a year. Summer training of 6-12 weeks is also provided through sponsored programmes such as the KVPY, INSPIRE, Summer research fellowship programme sponsored by Science Academies etc. Read more HERE.

Regional Centre for Biotechnology(RCB)

TIFR offers Visiting Students Research Programme (VSRP) for undergraduates and selected students are paid a monthly stipend at Rs 7000/- per month and to and fro travel re-imbursement from the place of their residency. Read more HERE.
