Department of Students’ Development
Introduction:
Earlier Students’ development department’s nomenclature was Students Welfare Department but it has been changed to Department of Students’ Development by Maharashtra University Act-2016. The department has a key role to play in shaping the students’ cultural aspect as a part of extracurricular activities. Keeping the idea in mind that, students can generate new path breaking ideas only if they are provided good ambiance. Students’ Development Department formulates various programs to cater cultural, moral and scientific enrichment of students on the campus as well as in the affiliated colleges. Along with it this department carries out some welfare schemes for the students as Earn and Learn Scheme, Student Safety Insurance Scheme, Swas scheme etc.
Functions of DSD:
- To prepare students for youth festival at State, Zonal, National and Inter-National level.
- To conduct mural lecture series ( BahishalVyakhyanmala).
- To provide grants for Special Lecture Series.
- To take Necessary steps for promotion of culture and students’ development activities in colleges and university departments.
- To conduct elections of the University Students’ council.
- To establish anti-ragging committees and squads.
- To organize university, state, national and international level competitions, skills development workshops and interactive programmes in various fields for the students.
- Implementation of Endowment Schemes. Swas, Insurance Policies and student Exchange schemes.
- Implementation of aims and objectives of students’ Development cell.
Cultural Programmes: Students’ development department organizes annual cultural gathering for the campus students. In it students from all campus schools take part enthusiastically. This is usually a weeklong event, comprising of sports activities like Volleyball, Kabaddi, Cricket, Long jump, Athletics & Shotput and Cultural Activities like Rangoli, Floral Decoration, Fashion Designing, Debate, Elocution, Essay competition, Poetry, Quiz, Antakshari, Fish pond, & Vishesh Gun Darshan, Singing Competition, Dance Competition etc.
Youth Festival: It is an intercollegiate level four days activity of the university. Students’ development department plays an important role in promoting and facilitating for the smooth organization of Youth Festival annually for the all students of affiliated colleges/ institutes and the campus of the university. More than 1200 students participate in this four days activity and perform in twenty eight different events.
Indradhanushya: Indradhanushya is a state level youth festival that has been initiated at the behest of the Chancellor of the university. Our Students development department motivates and prepares students to participate in Indradhanushya. For this youth festival interested and talented students in cultural activities like music, drama, dance, elocution, debate, fine arts etc. are selected. The University sends a circular to all affiliated colleges/ institutes and orgnises a camp for the selected students. After practice and trial final team is being selected to participate in the Indradhanushya youth festival. All funding in respect of the above is made from the university funds. Our university has won many prizes in the Youth festival.
Awards/ Cash Prizes: Every year Students Development Department felicities and gives the cash prizes for award winner and participant Students in Indradhanushya, State level, West Zone Inter University level, National level youth festival. The prize distribution programme is being orgnised on the occasion of the university Foundation Day every year. Along with it the participant and winner Students of youth festivals are given additional marks in his examination.
In addition to it our department felicitates and distributes the Annual Magazine Awards to the colleges in the programme. The university invites magazines from the affiliated colleges and gives prizes to the best magazines every year. To make available the platform to the Students at collages, encourage them to write and explore their ideas is the main objective of this award.
Birth/Death Anniversary: Every year Students’ development department celebrates the Birth/Death Anniversaries of national leaders and eminent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Yashwantrao Chavan, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Phule, Ch. Shivaji Maharaj, Swami Vivekanand, Mahatma Basveshwar, Sh. AnnabhauSathe, Savitribaiphule, Maa Jijau etc. and other National days.
Special Lecture – Series: Promoting the affiliated colleges for lecture series on behalf of renowned National leaders, Social Reformers and Educational Pioneers to create Intellectual environment and impart the mass education on contemporary issues. Following Lecture series are granted up to Rs. 5000/- each.

Bahishal Vyakhanmala (Mural Lecture Series): In addition to Special lecture series the university assists for the orgnisation of Bahishal Vyakhanmala (Mural Lecture Series). As Mahatma Gandhi admonished to go to the villages, main objective of the Bahishal vyakhyanmala to orgnise lectures of the eminent persons on various subjects for the village people. Every year the university gives financial assistance to the affiliated collages, Libraries and N.G.Os to organize Vaykhanmala. Each institution has to organize two lectures at two different places by inviting speakers from the list approved by the university.
Earn and Learn Scheme:
The main objective of the Earn and Learn scheme is to help needy students who are economically backward, intelligent and meritorious but cannot afford higher education. Earn and learn scheme creates self sufficiency and self respect in the students. It makes higher education some extant easy to the poor, meritorious and the needy students. The University has adopted highly transparent mechanism to shortlist the students for this scheme. Students have to submit their application along with income certificate of their parents in the respective schools in response to the notification issued by Director Students’ Development. Director of each school shortlists the 20 students and sends list to the Director Students’ Development. As per the requirement from various sections of the administrative offices, hostels, health center, schools etc the work is allotted to the students. Students working under this scheme are given two hour work per day and paid an honorarium of Rs. 50/- per hour. Attendance record of all enrolled students is strictly maintained by the Directors of the respective schools / section and payment is made as per the attendance sheet.
