About The School

Introduction

The  School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies was established in 2000 with the aim of promoting the study of language, literature and culture.   It also aims to provide the students of this region with opportunities to recognize and face the challenges of globalization in their personal and public lives.  At the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, we strive to enhance the students’ literary sensibilities and insights through interdisciplinary modes and methods inherent in the very concept of this School.  During the past eighteen years, the School has remained a center of various literary activities.  Various authors, learned scholars and professors have delivered lectures in the school constantly.  From the beginning, the School has developed relations with other leading institutions in the field.

To generate interest in language and literature at higher levels of learning, the School has been conducting post graduate teaching effectively – organizing seminars, conferences, workshops, and conducting programs such as “Face to Face with a Writer. The school tries to give new and progressive direction to the research carried out in the fields of language, literature and culture.

Today, we are connected to the whole world through the internet, TV and other media. We encounter various languages and cultures every moment. Under such conditions, foreign languages can help us in understanding the world around us better, and can also encourage us to discover new horizons beyond our own borders. Languages can also help us to gain cultural understanding and cultivate a multi-cultural ethos. The objective of the departments of foreign languages is to help the students learn foreign languages, so that their own understanding of the world is enriched, and so that they may be better prepared to succeed in their chosen professions.

Training in foreign languages will help in meeting the increasing demand for competent communicators in the workplace and will help students to develop a variety of skills necessary in the professional world. Training in foreign languages will also help in fulfilling the increasing demand for graduates having a strong and broad base in cultural knowledge relevant to global changes in the age of information. The teachers at these departments practice the communicative approach of teaching foreign languages and make use of innovative teaching practices so that the students gain maximum benefit from the courses.

Department of Marathi

Introduction

Department of English

Introduction

About English Department

The School of Language, Literature, and Culture Studies was established with the department of English in 2000 with the aim of promoting the study of language, literature and culture. The School also aims to provide the students with opportunities to recognise and face the challenges of globalisation in their personal and public lives. By 2026, more than 700 students have completed postgraduate programme from the school and the degree was awarded to them. In 2009, the M. Phil programme in English was introduced and it was run till 2020. Nearly 200 students were awarded the M. Phil degree.  The school is the research centre for Ph. D. degree in English.

In the initial stages, the syllabi of the school and that of the affiliated collages in the jurisdiction was same. However, in 2006, the School obtained academic autonomy and started an independent curriculum for the M.A. in English with CGPA pattern. With the new syllabi, the English department has been constantly striving to enhance the students’ literary sensibilities and insights through interdisciplinary modes and methods, which are inherent in the very concept of the School.

Over the past twenty-six years, the department has remained a centre of various literary activities. Various authors, learned scholars and professors have delivered lectures in the department. Since the beginning, the department has been developing relations with other leading institutions functioning in the fields of literature, language, etc.

Language is the backbone of all human relationships and all branches of knowledge. And English is a window on the world. To generate interest in language and literature at higher levels of learning, the English Department, along with effective teaching, has been organising seminars, conferences, workshops and conducting programs such as ‘Face to Face with a Writer’. Through its syllabi, the department has been striving to give new and progressive directions to the research carried out in the fields of language, literature and culture. All the teachers in the department have established their identity as the creative writers and literary critics.

In 2023, the department has revised its syllabi as per the guidelines of NEP-2020 and introduced employment oriented, skill-based courses. Approximately, 100 students have cleared the SET and NET examination and working in high-schools, colleges, universities and other various public sectors.

Department of French
Department of French - Introduction

Department of French
French language courses have been offered by the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies from 2012-13, initially under the aegis of the Centre for Foreign Languages. This later became the Department of French, which, in addition to running the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Courses in French, also offers 2 and 4 credit intra and inter school open elective courses in French language and literature for P.G. programmes. From 2019-20, the Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma Courses in French are also credit based, incorporating blended learning and ICT based resources in a major way. From 2024-25, the Department also offers Generic electives and Ability Enhancement courses in French for NEP UG Programs. The Department of French strives to maintain international standards in teaching-learning of French. The Department of French has the primary objective of ensuring that French is an important value addition for students in their prospective academic and professional life, as well a gateway for providing life skills that can expand the horizon of our students. Therefore, the Department of French focuses on both the linguistic and extra linguistic aspects of language learning in all FLE programmes and courses. It specially takes into account the specific needs of the students of this region, while offering courses on French language, Francophone literatures and cultures and French for specific objectives.
